Shape the Face of Cancer Treatment at Luminate Medical
At Luminate, our mission is to make cancer care more human. We design and build technologies that help oncologists make cancer care better, faster, and safer for patients.
Our first two products in development, Lily and Lilac, are revolutionary wearable devices designed to address hair loss and peripheral neuropathy respectively – two of the most common and difficult side effects of cancer treatment. We have an exciting pipeline focused on building products that help cancer patients to live, not just survive. Our latest product Lotus enables at-home cancer care.
We’re looking for a Design Engineer to be a leading contributor to our device design, bringing the device from design freeze through to a clinical trial and onto the market. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a multi-award-winning team and play a decisive part in the development and production of life changing devices. Above all, you will need to enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, be passionate about working with people, and thrive in taking responsibility for delivering projects on-time to make a real-world patient impact.
Working at Luminate Medical
This is a key early hire at a rapidly growing company. You will have an opportunity to shape the development of multiple high-impact patient-facing products and gain first-hand insights into the growth of a start-up.
We offer a highly competitive salary comparable with multinational medical device companies, a flexible benefits package (including health insurance and pension), alongside a company laptop, headphones and camera.
We believe in quality of life in our products and for our people, and offer flexible working hours, and a generous vacation policy.
What You Will Do:
Drive the design of patient-focused cancer care products from concept to manufacture, including:
Generating new design ideas and concepts that meet the overarching design requirements.
Creating rendered visuals of concepts using CAD packages, Keyshot or other software.
Utilising CAD tools such as CREO and SolidWorks to generate detailed product designs.
Communicating design decisions, interpreting literature and test results, and influencing design direction.
Exploring and vetting materials, components and suppliers.
Ensuring the patient is at the centre of the design by working closely with clinical and marketing to define the product user needs.
Defining design requirements from high level user needs specifications.
Producing 2D CAD drawings detailing design components and assemblies for suppliers and manufacture.
Ensuring that DFM and DFA principles are embedded in the design from the start.
Leading the completion of tasks and projects through a methodological and planned approach to product development.
Testing, analysis and development of design concepts for novel medical devices through:
Creating prototypes within our R&D workshop utilising rapid prototyping techniques for rigid, flexible, soft and textile materials to prove concept effectiveness.
Creating user testing group protocols for formative and summative testing, compliant with IEC 62366-1.
Lead user testing groups to test product designs in the real world, documenting insights and iterating on concepts.
Lead the delivery of projects in a timely fashion by working closely with, guiding, and building relationships with external suppliers and manufacturing partners, managing their time effectively and maintaining agreed timelines.

Product Development Experience: Worked on several product design projects, and 4+ years of experience in a product design role. We would prefer medical device experience but are interested in meeting candidates with design experience around consumer products.
Design Skills: Outstanding CAD surfacing experience (we use CREO, but we can provide training), sketching and aesthetic design skills. Experience designing parts for injection moulding an advantage.
Testing: Clear ability to create robust tests of design concepts, predict outcomes and determine iteration requirements.
Garment Design: Experience working with wearable products that involve textiles.
Human Factors & Usability: Prior experience designing and executing usability studies and incorporating human factors considerations into the product design.
Prototyping: Extremely comfortable with rapid prototyping using FDM, SLS and SLA 3D printing. Can demonstrate understanding of the limitations of rapid prototyping and experienced in using machined prototypes. Good benchtop skills for manufacturing prototypes.
Manufacturing: Demonstrable examples of design for assembly/manufacture experience.
Experience Advantages – It Would Be Advantageous to Have:
Knowledge of plastics forming techniques such as injection molding, dip moulding, blow moulding and thermoforming.
Experience with directly creating Design History File documents such as specifications, drawings and assembly documentation.
Experience interacting with medical device regulatory requirements and applicable standards, in particular FDA guidance, MDR guidance, ISO 13485 and IEC 60601.
Experience working within a Quality Management System to ISO13485 standards.
Experience interacting with medical device regulatory requirements and applicable standards, in particular FDA guidance, MDR guidance, ISO 13485 and IEC 60601.
