Transport Manager

The Transport Manager will be responsible for managing the safe, efficient, and compliant transportation of packed chemicals to customers and storage facilities nationwide. This role requires strong leadership, regulatory knowledge, and operational expertise to ensure seamless delivery while adhering to safety and environmental regulations.
This is a senior role within the Management team.
The Person:
* 3 to 5 years’ experience in running a midsize, nationwide multidrop transport network, with the ability to work efficiently in a fast-moving environment.
* Working with a team of 4 on the transport desk and managing upwards of 15 drivers daily.
* An excellent communicator both written and verbally, with a working knowledge of trucks and equipment.
* An excellent working knowledge of transport routing systems and load planning is essential in the role, with a focus on customer service dealing with queries from both internal and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
* Oversee daily transport operations ensuring all deliveries are done in a timely and safe manner.
* Ensure full compliance with local, national, and international regulations, including ADR (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road) and all RSA and HSA guidelines.
* Manage and maintain a fleet of vehicles, ensuring proper servicing, maintenance, and licensing.
* Develop and implement efficient routing and scheduling strategies to optimize costs and improve delivery performance (multi drop and full loads).
* Lead, train, supervise and recruit drivers and transport staff, ensuring adherence to all necessary safety standards and company policies.
* Collaborate with logistics, warehouse, and customer service teams to streamline supply chain processes and ensure that customers’ requirements are met.
* Monitor transport budgets and control costs related to fuel, vehicle maintenance, and operational expenses.
* Conduct risk assessments and implement safety procedures to minimize hazards related to chemical transportation.
* Maintain accurate transport documentation, including permits, licenses, and compliance records.
* Investigate and address any transport incidents, implementing corrective measures to prevent recurrence.
Qualifications & Experience:
* CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) in Transport Management.
* Proven experience in transport management, preferably in the chemical or hazardous materials industry.
* In-depth knowledge of transport regulations.
* Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
* Proficiency in transport management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
* Excellent personnel, communication and negotiation abilities.
* Ability to handle high-pressure situations, be flexible and make informed decisions quickly.
* Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field (preferred but not mandatory with relevant experience).
* ADR certification or relevant hazardous materials transport qualification.
* Experience working with third-party logistics providers and fleet management systems.
* Knowledge of environmental and sustainability practices in transportation.
