The role
Electro-Convulsive Therapy (Recovery) Staff Nurse
(0.32WTE Part-time, Permanent)
St Patrick’s Mental Health Services seeks an ECT Staff Nurse to work in the recovery room on ECT treatment days and to work as part of the multi-disciplinary team and liaise closely with other E.C.T. clinical professionals; CNM2, CNM1, the consultant-in-charge, anaesthetist, and other Nursing staff.
The hours of work are 12 hours worked over two 6 hours shifts – Tuesday & Friday morning, 7.30am to 1.30pm weekly.
Location
This position is based on site at; St Patrick’s Hospital, James’s Street, Dublin 8, incorporating St Patricks Hospital Lucan and all SPMHS Dean Clinics.
Responsibilities
* The nurse should have a good knowledge of the ECT process, possible side-effects and the nursing actions required in the event of their occurrence
* Be familiar with the ECT clinic and the location of emergency equipment and be trained and competent in its use
* Ensure that all equipment is in working order prior to commencement of list.
* Be competent in BLS and ACLS
* Co-ordinate the arrival of patients to the ECT Department with relevance to the needs of specific treatment days to ensure a consistent flow of patients for treatment while avoiding long delays for individual patients
* On accepting the patient from the treatment room, receive a handover from the anaesthetist with regard to each patient and any specific instructions to be followed
* Attach the patient to the pulse oximeter, administer O2, record B/P, pulse, resp, observe level of consciousness, ensure a clear airway is maintained and record all findings on the Post-ECT Checklist within the ECT Treatment booklet
* Care for the patient in the recovery room for at least 40 minutes or as necessary and as directed by the Anaesthetist
* Document the patient’s level of re-orientation following ECT at all the times indicated in the Post ECT Checklist for at least 40 minutes or as necessary
* Alert the anaesthetist to any concerns or adverse events during recovery
* Provide a safe environment for the patients and staff while in the recovery area
* Supervise the care of the patient in the most acute stages of recovery and be available to address any concerns of the escorting nurse regarding their patients
* Complete all relevant documentation before the patient returns to the ward or home
* Ensure the patient is not discharged back to the ward until fully recovered
* Ensure Day-Case Patients are fully recovered before they leave, that their discharge forms are appropriately completed and that they are in the company of a responsible adult
* At the end of the list: restock the recovery room for the next day’s session.
* Participate actively and work in collaboration with the ECT CNM II and CNM1 in the co-ordination of nursing care in the ECT Department
* Act up for more senior Nursing management staff as required
* Work with the CNMII in identifying the manpower resources and skills required in the ECT Department at any given time and with Nursing Administration to ensure these are available
* Promote and supervise individualised patient care for all patients in the ECT Department
* Report and address any activities jeopardising the delivery of patient care.
* Foster and maintain good channels of communication with staff from other departments
* Facilitate and co-operate with any inspectorate to the Hospital
* Commit to identifying one’s own ongoing educational/training requirements of in the clinical area and communicate these needs to the supervisor
* Support and give direction in the education, assessment & supervision of student nurses in conjunction with the CNM1, CNM2 and Clinical Placement Co-ordinators
* Know and adhere to the constraints of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland code of professional conduct and scope of practice

Qualifications and/or experience
* Must hold current RPN/RGN/RNID registration, with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI)
* Be available to attend Royal College of Psychiatrists, ECT Accreditation Service or National Association of Lead Nurses in ECT training courses as required
Professional knowledge
* Have experience and appreciation of working within a quality assurance environment
* Experience working with all disciplines at every level in promoting the development of services
* Have strong knowledge of ECT, indications, procedure, adverse effects & management of same & recovery procedure.
* Have strong knowledge of the ECT policies

Terms and Conditions
Tenure: 0.32WTE Part-time, Permanent contract, pensionable as below.
Working Week: This is a Staff Nurse position; 12 hours worked over two 6 hours shifts – Tuesday & Friday morning, 7:30am to 1.30pm weekly.
Salary: The salary for the position is according to the Staff Nurse 2025 salary scale, pro rata for the hours worked.
Annual Leave: The annual leave associated with the position is as appropriate to number of years’ post-qualification experience, pro rata.
Pension: All pensionable staff become members of the pension scheme after successful completion of probation. The scheme is a defined contribution scheme with a deduction from the salary of the employee of 4%.
In respect of an internal appointment being made the individuals existing pension arrangements will continue.
Probation: The appointee will be appointed in a probationary capacity for the first six months during which time the job holder’s performance will be subject to ongoing review.
Any extension to or suspension of the period of probation will be in line with the European Union (Transparent and Predictable Working Conditions) 2022.
Health: The appointee must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the position and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.
Character: The appointee must be of good character.
Retirement Age: Normal retirement age for employees is 66 years which at present is also normal pension age.
