POSITION TYPE: Teaching Principal, Grades PK-5
The Teaching Principal for Island Schools provides leadership for two distinct schools and island communities. Peaks Island Elementary School, on Peaks Island, serves about 45 students from Pre-K to 5th grade. Cliff Island School, on Cliff Island, is a one-room schoolhouse that serves approximately 3 children in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade. Both island schools are treasured by their communities, take pride in their island history and culture, and add to the unique character of Portland Public Schools.
PIES and CIS follow the same curriculum as other elementary schools in Portland, with some adaptations for their small size and unique school settings. The time allocation for this role is approximately 50% school administrator and 50% teaching. The teaching assignment will be determined based on candidate experience and needs in the building but could include: Chapter 104, ESOL, Special Education, interventions, and/or substitute teaching as needed.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
* Master's degree from an accredited college or university in education or a closely related field.
* Five years of successful experience working with diverse elementary school students required.
* Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
* Experience as a teacher leader and/or school leader.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
* Maine State fingerprint (CHRC) authorization (more info: https://www.maine.gov/doe/cert/fingerprinting)
* One of the following Maine State Certifications (more info: https://www.maine.gov/doe/cert):
o 057 - Teaching Principal
o 040 - Building Admin
o 045 - Assistant Building Admin

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
* Travel by ferry or boat required.
* Attendance at evening and weekend student activities, Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) meetings or other community events and functions, as required.
