Reporting to: Group Head of Safety, Health & Environment
Background ESB is a large and complex business operating across the electricity market, from generation through transmission and distribution, to supply of customers.
ESB employs approximately 9,500 people across the island of Ireland and in GB.
The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) will oversee health and wellness programs for a diverse workforce that includes both office-based and physical working roles often in safety critical environments.
The CMO will be responsible for developing and implementing health policies, managing occupational health services, and ensuring compliance with health regulations and best practice in relation to occupational health and wellbeing of ESB staff.
This role requires a strategic leader with a deep understanding of occupational health, preventive care, and wellness programs tailored to varied job functions and diverse working groups.
This is a full-time position.
Key Responsibilities Health Policy Development:
Engage with the ESB businesses in relation to their vision of health and wellbeing priorities and shape their thinking in relation to organisational and work issues with a health dimension and address concerns identified by these groups.
Develop and implement comprehensive health policies and procedures.
Ensure policies are inclusive and address the needs of our diverse workforce and working environments.
Analyse health data to identify trends and areas for improvement and policy/procedure development.Occupational Health/Case Management:
Maintain oversight of clinical case management particularly in relation to ESB reportable illnesses in staff engaged in safety critical roles.
Directly manage selected cases involving complex medical issues or serious health challenges particularly in the above setting.
Lead the health management response to health crises, such as pandemics or workplace accidents.
Develop and implement emergency health protocols.
Report on health metrics to senior management and stakeholders.Employee Wellness Programs:
Advise on wellness programs that promote physical and mental health.
Devise and oversee specific Occupational Health Screening programs.
Promote awareness of health and wellness resources available to employees.Regulatory Compliance:
Ensure policy, procedure and practice compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations and best practice.
Engage with the ESB businesses on impacts of regulatory changes and implement necessary adjustments.
Ensure compliance with governance procedures and standards for occupational health staff and contracted occupational health providers.Occupational Health Department Development and Evolution:
Broaden the Department services into an Occupational Health training practice.
Lead the acquisition of accreditation processes e.g.
SEQOHS.
Develop pre-employment medical and fitness assessment resources compatible with the changing needs of the businesses.Collaboration and Leadership:
Collaborate with human resources, business management, safety officers and other departments to integrate health initiatives.
Lead and motivate a team of healthcare professionals and support staff.
Ensure that cultural competence and inclusivity are an integral part of the role, contributing to a more diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace.
Showcase ESB's occupational health service and standards internally and externally.Essential Experience, Ideal Skills and Qualifications Primary qualification in Medicine from recognized Medical School/UniversityPost Graduate medical qualification in Occupational MedicineSpecialist registration or entitlement to specialist registration in Occupational Medicine with the Medical Council of IrelandMinimum 5 years of Post Graduate experience in Occupational Medical practiceExperience in an Occupational Medical leadership roleStrong knowledge of occupational health and safety regulationsExcellent communication and leadership skillsAbility to work effectively in a diverse and dynamic environmentAn ability to gain and maintain a sound understanding of the business to inform both individual case management and policy approachLocation The Chief Medical Officer is based at ESB Head Office, 27 Lower Fitzwilliam Street, Dublin.
Occasional travel to ESB sites will be a feature of this role.
