The Department of Maritime Studies at the National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI) is led by the Head of Department and is responsible for the delivery of 14 academic and professional programmes. Maritime Studies activities are fully incorporated into NMCIs operational and executive management systems and are fully integrated in to, and part of MTUs academic, teaching and learning, administrative, financial, management and support structures. Students undertaking courses of study with Maritime Studies are registered as MTU students. The Department has four academic specialisations represented within it; Deck-Navigation, Marine Engineering, Marine ElectroTechnology and Supply Chain. The Department has 23 staff who are NMCI based and who are all very experienced maritime and/or supply chain industry professionals. Additionally, NMCI has an Admin team and three technical staff. Department staff, particularly those who take responsibility for overseeing specific years and class groups, support and work closely with the Maritime Liaison Officer in relation to cadet placement activities. Beyond their lecturing duties and in so far as existing arrangements enable, Department academic staff engage in research and innovation activities with the NMCI Halpin Research Group and work with the Head of Department and the NMCI Head of College on academic programme management and new programme development. The position is based in the National Maritime College of Ireland Campus (Ringaskiddy) in the first instance. The successful candidate will report to the Maritime Studies Head of Department. Duties of the Post: The Lecturer Career Grade will play an active role in the academic direction of courses including teaching, research, academic assessment and academic administration. The appointee should carry out such duties as are assigned by management including but not limited to: (a) Teaching such assigned classes as deemed appropriate by management of the Munster Technological University (herein after, the University), day or evening, up to 560 hours per annum including supervision of post-graduate students. (b) Carrying out assessment, monitoring and evaluation of examinations work, and providing an academic and consultative support to students in their learning activities. (c) Providing academic input on existing and new courses and course development and course co-ordination. (d) Engaging in research, consultancy and development work as appropriate. (e) Participating in committees appropriate to courses and meetings convened by management. (f) Maintaining appropriate records and making available information as required by management. (g) Engaging in promotion including student recruitment. (h) Promoting scholarship, with a focus on Maritime Education and Training. (i) Participating in the development, implementation and maintenance of academic quality assurance arrangements. (j) Participating in appropriate activities necessary to the development of their department/school and of the University. (k) Directing and supervising the work of Tutor/Demonstrator and taking academic responsibility for the academic standards of this work. The performance of these duties will require attendance in addition to class contact hours during the normal working week. Qualification Requirements: Essential: An Honours (Level 8) Primary Degree (second class or higher) from a recognised degree awarding authority, majoring in degree level studies in Supply Chain Management or cognate technical/business discipline, and a relevant Level 9 Masters degree from a recognised degree awarding authority. AND Not less than three years of relevant professional experience subsequent to obtaining the above qualification. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend for interview. A successful candidate will be required to submit a passport, documentary evidence confirming academic qualifications, and to undergo a medical examination.
